Hispanic Foodways Learning by Teaching Principles: A Diabetes Self-Management Skills Program for Patients with Restricted Health Literacy Skills

Hispanic Foodways considers that education should lead into action. Hispanic Foodways promotes health literacy, cultural competence and Learning by Teaching Principles as core elements to effectively attain diabetes self-management skills.

Learning by Teaching Principles Core Components

  • Step by Step Learning Participants learn information in “chunks” or pieces.
  • Show Participant learns skills through the use of visuals or props. Culturally appropriate graphics and examples are used. Addresses visual learner’s needs
  • Tell Emphasis is on:
    • “How to” instead of “what”
    • Reinforcing key themes
    • Using common words and explaining meaning of more complex words
  • Do Participants are engaged in the learning process through examples and participation via questions (true/false, multiple choice) that reinforce learning objectives. Using tangible instead of abstract examples help participants “translate” nutrition information into action.
