Program Development

Hispanic Foodways plans, develops, implements and evaluates education programs with emphasis on cultural sensitivity and health literacy. All programs can be tailored to small groups or community initiatives

Program Teaching Materials

We develop health education curriculum and education material with a multicultural perspective

Go Food Shopping with a Latina Diabetes Nutrition Expert

This program seeks to promote effective diabetes self-management through smart shopping skills. The grocery shopping tour is an interactive activity to increase nutrition awareness and knowledge among Hispanics/Latinos with diabetes.

Hispanic Foodways

  • Developed interactive curriculum
  • Conducted supermarket tours focusing on teaching “skills” for diabetes management
  • Integrated ethnic food preferences and preparation methods into key health messages
  • Developed education and evaluation tools

Diabetes Faith-Based Coordinator Program

This faith-based outreach initiative included 14 churches, representing approximately 4,000 active church members. Each pastor designated a health coordinator who attended educational sessions on diabetes prevention and management strategies. The health educator educates the community about diabetes, identifies and assists church members in need of medical referrals and helps with self-management skills.

Hispanic Foodways

  • Developed diabetes education curriculum for church members to deliver diabetes education messages to members in their congregation
  • Conducted train the trainer sessions

Diabetes Community Education Program

Hispanic Foodways

  • Assisted in the research and development of a 16-module Diabetes Lifestyle Program curriculum and nutrition education tools for trainers and participants in a culturally and linguistically appropriate format.
